Resetting a Whirlpool Washing Machine

Finding the manual for the washing machine and checking it is the best way to determine which buttons must be pressed to reset it.

If you can’t find the manual, a combination of the Pause/Cancel and Power buttons on your Whirlpool model may work.

To reset your Whirlpool washing machine, follow these steps:

  1. Two times on the Pause/Cancel button.
  2. Once, press the Power button.

If the reset was successful, you should hear a beep or see the display panel flash. 

Circuit Breaker Reset

If you are unable to unplug the washing machine, you can turn off the power by resetting the circuit breaker in your home’s electrical panel.

To reset your Whirlpool washer, follow these steps:

  • Using the control panel, turn off the washing machine.
  • In your home’s electrical panel, locate the washing machine’s circuit breaker.
  • Lift the circuit breaker to turn off the washer’s power.
  • Allow three minutes.
  • To restore power to the washer, reset the circuit breaker.
  • Wait 30 seconds before turning on the washer from the control panel.

The most common method for resetting a Whirlpool washing machine is to turn off the machine. The reset works by allowing the washing machine’s electrical charge to dissipate, allowing it to reset.

If the reset fails, try it again, but this time wait twice as long.

Before unplugging the washing machine, make sure it is turned off on the control panel for safety and to avoid damaging it.

To reset your Whirlpool washer, follow these steps:

  • Using the control panel, turn off the washing machine.
  • Turn off the washing machine.
  • Allow three minutes.
  • Reconnect the washer and wait thirty seconds before turning it on.

Adjust the dial

  • Using the control panel, turn off the washing machine.
  • Set the dial to “Normal.”
  • One click counterclockwise on the dial.
  • Turn the dial three times clockwise.
  • One click counterclockwise on the dial.
  • Turn the dial one click clockwise.
  • Start by pressing the Start button.
  • A control panel should be illuminated.
  • Check that the Rinse, Wash, and Stop buttons are lit up.
  • Turning the dial or pressing these buttons should bring them to life.
  • On the control panel, turn off the washer.
  • Unplug the washing machine for twenty seconds.
  • Start the washer.
  • If the procedure was successful, your washer will now be reset.

If your Whirlpool Washer Door is locked, it is usually due to a problem that occurs after a wash cycle has finished.

If this occurs, you can easily reset your washer to resolve the problem.

Unplug the washer and leave it unplugged for two minutes if you need to reset your Whirlpool Washer and reset the Whirlpool Washer Door that is locked and stuck at the end of a cycle.

Then, reconnect the washer and check to see if the door lock has been released. 

Press the Power and Program Buttons at the same time.

If none of the above methods work, you may be able to reset your model by pressing the following buttons: Power, Program, and Water Level.

After pressing these buttons, the lid of the washing machine must be opened and closed.

If none of the above methods work to reset your Whirlpool washer, the control board may be faulty. If this is the case, it may be time to consider hiring a trained technician to troubleshoot and repair the washing machine.

Whirlpool Washer Sensor Reset

If your Whirlpool Washer becomes stuck on the Sensor while you are washing your clothes normally, you will need to reset the washer sensor. This can be accomplished quickly if the steps outlined below are followed.

  • Make sure your Whirlpool Washer is in Standby Mode before resetting it and the Whirlpool Washer Sensor.
  • Turn the knob in a counterclockwise direction.
  • You should now see two LED lights appear.
  • Check the drain pump to ensure it is operational.
  • Turn the washer tip upside down to gain access to the motor actuator.
  • Remove the two screws from the plastic cover of the actuator if it needs to be replaced.
