Rather than the traditional method of inserting your card into the slot, contactless payment allows you to process the transaction by holding or waving your card, smartphone, or even your Garmin or Fitbit over the terminal.

These devices can communicate with each other without making physical contact, hence the name contactless payment. This is because contactless is enabled by near-field communication (NFC) technology.

NFC, as a high-frequency radio wave, enables secure information transfer at close range. Your card or device will communicate with the payment terminal, which will inform you whether or not the payment was accepted.
